What is Heart Rate Reserve?
HRR (heart rate reserve) is a vital requirement in determining the most effective and safest type of exercise routine a person should follow. Now time for the real training, first there is the aerobic zone (70-80%), this is ideal in utilizing and transporting oxygen with continuous and long and slow distance endurance training. The Anaerobic zone (80-90%) tries to increase the body’s lactate threshold. Finally the red line zone (90-100%) is reserved for people who wish to increase their twitch muscle fiber speed.
OK, to calculate the target heart rate using the Karvonen formula, just deduct your age from the number 220. For example, for a 50 year old man that would be 220-50=170. Once you have that number, in order to get your HRR, deduct your resting heart rate from that number. If your resting heart rate is 65 it would be 170-65=105.
Finally to get the target heart rate, multiply your HRR to the percent range of your target training intensity and add it to your resting heart rate. An example, you want to train at 70%, multiply 105 by 70% then add 65 (105X0.7+65=139). So your target heart rate is now 139 BPM
